Rental Car Insurance: Are You Covered When You Travel?

Did you know that some travel insurance plans could cover you while driving on vacation? While the specific coverage your policy includes depends on the company where you purchase your policy, many plans – especially for international travel – include this as part of the package. That’s good news for you, especially if you’re unfamiliar with international driving laws or used to driving on the “wrong” side of the road!

If your travel insurance doesn’t include rental car coverage, you have a few options for plans.

Work with the rental car company.

Almost all rental car companies will offer you extra insurance when you make your purchase. Prices can range from just a few dollars per day to several hundreds of dollars to cover you during the entire vacation. Make sure you read the policy carefully to understand what you are buying. The cheaper plans typically only cover the bare minimum, so upgrading may be prudent.

Talk about options with your current insurance company.

Some car insurance companies have plans available to families going on vacation – all you have to do is ask. These policies will definitely cause your rates to increase a bit, but the upside is that you have more control over the plan options. This is the best option for people who are doing extensive traveling and need to be covered over a long period of time.

Work with a third party.

If your typical car insurance company doesn’t offer coverage, a third party insurance agency might be able to cover you during your trip. These plans are sometimes more expensive, but can offer coverage that other policies may not have available.

The key when shopping for car insurance while travel is to shop around. Travel insurance of any kind can be extremely inexpensive, as long as you’re willing to incest some time into looking for the best rates. While you always hope not to have to use this coverage, it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. After all, the best travel insurance plans will not only pay for any costs you incur with accidents, but will also offer you assistance in finding the nearest mechanic, getting a new rental car, and reimbursing costs for anything you may have missed while waiting for the tow truck.
